Electric Motorsport: an alternative not the final solution

16.10.2021

In recent years, thanks to greater awareness on the subject of climate change and emissions crisis, the automotive landscape has seen the birth of different categories, in different disciplines oriented to sustainability.

The first was Formula E in 2014, followed by MotoE (2019), Extreme E, ETCR in 2021 and from next year also the FIA World Rallycross will be 100% electric.

This revolution posed a question that never before has competition posed itself: In the face of today's situation is it more fruitful to continue in this way or to change against the status quo, facing the consequences that this would entail? The response has not been uniform by the different categories, Formula 1 has recently nested a switch to bio fuels, but without implementing more electric components. In contrast, World Rallycross decided to switch to fully electric propulsion from 2022.

The correct solution/answer does not exist, certainly from the fans, to see to replace that sound that for decades has characterized a discipline, with (almost)silence certainly cannot be tempting. What should not be misunderstood, however, is the fact that we are not faced with a single, forced-choice.

Today's technologies offer us more and more sophisticated and functional alternatives, we have to understand how electric Motorsport today is an alternative, not a definite solution.

It is right that there are categories built according to a certain philosophy and it is right that there is a counterpart built according to different dictates.

None of these is certifiably superior, they are different formulas of competition, if they interest it is right to follow them, otherwise not, without prevaricating the objectivity of things.
